The year 2020 is a year marked by the pandemic caused by COVID-19 and this year 2021, which has just begun, will be very important both at prevention and avoidance, as well as the progress of vaccine distribution worldwide in which the pharmaceutical industry and especially the air and ground transportation industries come into play. For this reason, we will address the subject in the present article.

Unprecedented logistics operation
With the progress of science and the hard work of pharmaceutical laboratories the vaccine against COVID-19 has been obtained, however, due to the great variety of restrictions that have been agreed upon worldwide, airlines have been affected by the low connectivity among nations, which has generated the preparation of an unprecedented logistical operation to reach the entire world population, more than 7 billion people, with the long-awaited vaccine in more than 190 countries.
Air transportation of COVID-19 vaccines
Rafael Schvartzman, regional vice president for Europe of IATA, the International Air Transport Association, has mentioned that vaccine transportation is one of the best-known protocols and logistics for air transport companies, and he has suggested that in order to make a rapid and efficient transport of the COVID-19 vaccine, it’s necessary to make a series of revisions to the restrictions that have been activated during the year 2020 as a result of the pandemic caused by that virus.
Regarding the protocols, he mentions that air transport already counts with temperature control that ensures the cold chain of vaccines, this is due to the experience in the transport of medicines and vaccines. In addition, the IATA association has made recommendations so that these protocols and logistics have also complied with the distribution and ground transportation. Even though air transport is the only way to reach every country in the world, land transport is the only alternative, even with limitations, to reach every corner of the world.
Air traffic recovery
It is known that the European Commission of IATA is optimistic about the recovery of air traffic, they estimate to be able to recover at least 50% in relation to the air traffic of 2019 taking advantage of the great vaccination campaign against COVID-19, and to achieve this they have communicated to all the airlines that they must again reserve the slots to keep them this year we have started. Remembering that airlines had to reserve 80% of their slots before the pandemics, which triggered that during the first weeks of the pandemic some of these companies made the decision to fly their planes practically only with their crew.
